HIV/AIDS Youth Preventive Intervention

Schools Project - Moloney Medical Centre

Background

A needs assessment was carried out by Counselors in consultation with Community leaders, Teachers and Parents during our HIV/AIDS School program. The study identified gaps related to availability of information and use of HIV services to youth in schools.

Problem Statement

Several interventions have been put in place to prevent HIV/AIDS, but no long-term intervention specifically targets sexually active youth in schools. Our strategy is to support youth who die young in poverty, stigmatized and without help.

Key Objectives

  • • Bring more awareness to HIV/AIDS services
  • • Strengthen adherence to HIV care and treatment
  • • Help HIV positive children build self-esteem
  • • Train children to avoid HIV/AIDS stigma
  • • Increase routine HCT services in schools
  • • Provide psychosocial and emotional support
  • • Promote positive behavioral change
  • • Teach life skills for negotiating safer sex

Target Population

  • • School children (ages 12-24)
  • • Adolescents experiencing secondary characteristics
  • • HIV positive children needing support
  • • Orphans and vulnerable youth

Our Commitment

"ZERO NEW INFECTIONS, MY RESPONSIBILITY"

Our Advantages

  • • Staff are health workers by profession
  • • Local community members (no language barrier)
  • • Professionals in monitoring and evaluation

Current Limitations

  • • Financial facilitation needed
  • • Transport facilitation required
  • • Logistics and awareness materials needed
